Global Consciousness Project

The GCP is an international collaboration using scientific tools to look for structure in random data during major global events. We find weak but meaningful correlations during great organized meditations, celebrations like New Years, tragic events like big earthquakes, and terrorist attacks like 9/11. The linkage with shared periods of deep human engagement is consistent with the idea of a growing global consciousness. This forum is for discussion of the details, difficult questions, and conceptual underpinnings. Start with the Global Consciousness Project website at http://noosphere.princeton.edu/

The GCP is a scientific project and uses formal statistical analysis to test the hypothesis of structure in random data associated with global events. This forum is for discussion of procedures, interpretations and concerns relating to the analysis of GCP data. It can be used to ask how-to questions, and to develop collaborations that result in new assessments of questions and hypotheses about the data.

The GCP is designed to be a background monitoring system, and not a target for focused efforts to affect the data. Thus, we want to be aware of major events that might affect it and manifest or represent "global consciousness." This forum is for announcing and collating big events, and learning what defines the deep, global engagement that creates GCP effects.

We occasionally are the subject of news or media specials. This forum can be used to announce articles and interviews about the GCP and to discuss the issues and questions raised. (Upcoming examples are an interview for skeptiko.com by Alex Tsakiris scheduled for May 5; an appearance on the Coast to Coast radio show with George Noory, June 5.)

The project is unusual and outside the experience of many people, including those with a good education in science, and hence it generates skeptical comments. We believe informed skepticism is an essential part of scientific research. This forum is for discussion of skeptical views.

Much of the work of the GCP is done by volunteers, but there are ongoing expenses. We also have a lengthy list of questions and projects that can be addressed only when they are supported by new funds. This forum is for creative discussion of ideas and actions that can increase support for the GCP.

This forum is for people who would like to help make things happen for the GCP. Volunteers need to be be self-starters, working on something they find important. The forum is also for people to find others to work with, to do something they agree is worthwhile.
